CHUCKANUT

Chuckanut

If you love the idea of being “out of town” with close access to saltwater beaches, miles of trails, and higher-end single family homes, all of it accessed by a beautiful drive along a treed coastline with sunset views, then Bellingham’s Chuckanut neighborhood may be your dream come true!

Located in the south of Bellingham along Bellingham Bay (and inset Chuckanut Bay, beginning as the Edgemoore neighborhood ends and extending all the way to Whatcom County’s southern border, Chuckanut is one of our area’s most desirable and beautiful locales.

Residential lots range in size from a fraction of an acre to larger, more rare 10+acre pieces, and homes range from smaller, original cottages, to stunning NW Craftsman trophy homes. Many of these Chuckanut homes feature stunning views westward out past Chuckanut Island (also called Dot Island) and beyond to Lummi Island and the San Juans. The sunset and wild storms visible from Chuckanut are the stuff of legend.

Flanked on the east by 4000-acre Chuckanut Mountain, you will have close access to such trails as Oyster Dome, Fragrance Lake, Pine & Cedar Lakes, the Interurban Trail, as well as Clayton Beach and of course waterfront Larabee State Park – Washington’s oldest State Park (est. 1923).

You also have boat launch (and kayak or stand-up paddleboard access) at Wildcat Cove, a short hike down to Teddybear Cove and its unworldly sandstone geology, or a long, leisurely walk along the beach of Mud Bay. Alll residents of the Chuckanut neighborhood, too, are eligible to join the Chuckanut Beach Association, a collection of 5 non-public-access beaches on Chuckanut Bay where you can picnic, beach-comb, launch kayaks or swim.

For some of the area’s finest dining, you can stay right in the neighborhood and visit the Oyster Bar or Chuckanut Manor, both of them highly regarded for their seafood and other fine dishes.

Take a leisurely drive down Chuckanut and you’ll get a feel for this neighborhood’s appeal. If you have the time and ambition, try one of the many hikes that start literally right from the roadside. And for an extra treat, visit the legendary Chuckanut Bay Gallery on the west side of the road right where Old Samish Road comes in. The Gallery has been there for nearly 40 years and is sure to have something you will love – just like the neighborhood itself.
