Sunnyland

Sunnyland

As one of the more established and coveted neighborhoods in Bellingham, Sunnyland is home to a diverse group of people, buildings, and businesses who all have roots deep in the city. The majority of the neighborhood is residential, with the southern third of the area being devoted to light industrial use. One of the big advantages of Sunnyland is its proximity to shopping and dining in the neighborhood itself and in the nearby City Center. Sunnyland residents' favorites include Kulshan Brewing, Trader Joes, and the legendary Hardware Sales

The neighborhood association is quite active and involved in improving the community while looking after the preservation of key amenities and outdoor spaces. Memorial Park is a popular spot for residents to take a walk under large, leafy trees, and enjoy the well maintained lawn and landscaping. Sunnyland Park can often be seen with neighborhood children crawling all over the playground while parents can socialize and arrange playdates.

Without question, Sunnyland is an excellent neighborhood for young families to grow and thrive in a supportive environment. The public school track follows Sunnyland Elementary to Whatcom Middle to Bellingham High, all strong schools invested in by the community. For those who choose the private school option, Assumption School and Church is right next door to Bellingham High and has proven to be an invaluable part of the neighborhood.

Although the housing styles are varied and diverse, a good portion of them are Craftsman’s built in the early to mid century. Local architectural style influenced individual quirks and flair of each house, and proper maintenance over the years produced a variety of beautiful and structurally sound homes. While errands and shopping are usually accomplished with a car, Sunnyland is exceptionally walkable and bikeable, with many residents either walking or biking to get to work.
