How to Daisy Chain a Rope

Quick Summary

You are going to learn how to create a daisy chain to keep extra line neat and tidy after securing a load with a knot like a trucker's hitch. The video demonstrates the step-by-step process of creating continuous, linked loops and then securing the entire chain with a half hitch so it remains locked and does not come undone. Knowing this technique is valuable because it manages excess rope effectively, making the line tidy and beautiful. Furthermore, the entire chain comes undone easily with just a pull of the tail after releasing the final half hitch.

To try what's taught in the video, here's what you'll need and the exact steps to follow.

What you'll need and what to do

What You Will Need

• Extra line (the running/loose end of the rope)

• Fixed part of the rope (after securing a load, like with a trucker's hitch)

Action Steps

1. Take the running end (the loose end of the rope).

2. Make your own loop by passing the running end through the fixed part of the rope.

3. Make a small loop and poke your fingers through it.

4. Grab the running end with your fingers and make a new loop.

5. Pinch that new loop.

6. Make another loop.

7. Pinch that new loop again.

8. Make another loop.

9. Continue making loops in this manner until the daisy chain is nearly complete.

10. When you have about six inches of line left, make that last loop a little bigger than the others.

11. Do a half hitch around the last, slightly bigger loop.

12. Pull the half hitch tight to lock the daisy chain.

13. To undo the chain, undo the half hitch at the end.

14. Pull the tail (the running end).

Word for word video transcript

Hey everyone, Brandon Nelson. And in one minute, I'm going to show you how to make a daisy chain to keep all your extra line neat and tidy. Now, after you've tied your trucker's hitch and your load is secure and you've got all this extra line, that's when you use a daisy chain. We're going to start by taking the running end—the loose end of the rope—and we're going to make our own loop by passing it through the fixed part of the rope. We're gonna make a small loop and poke our fingers through it just like that. Then we take that running end, grab it with our fingers, make a new loop. Pinch it again, make another loop. Pinch it again, make another loop, and we keep doing that. Now, with your daisy chain all complete, let's show you how to lock it at the end so it doesn't come undone. When you've got about six inches left, make that last loop a little bigger than the others, and then just do a half hitch around it. Pull it tight and you're locked and ready to go. Your finished daisy chain is a thing of beauty, but it also comes undone beautifully. Watch this: you just undo that half hitch at the end and pull that tail. The whole thing comes undone. This has been Brandon Nelson for one minute. I'll see you next time.
