Simple Garage Test: Does Your Garage Door Work?
Quick Summary
This video shows you how to test and adjust your garage door, which is the largest moving part of your home. You will learn the two essential safety tests for electric closing doors: the laser beam test and the resistance test. The door must auto-reverse if the electric eye beam is broken or if it meets resistance while closing. If it fails the resistance test, the video demonstrates how to adjust the closing force knob on the opener. This information is crucial for safety, protecting children, pets, and objects from being crushed by the heavy door.
What you'll need and what to do
To try what's taught in the video, here's what you'll need and the exact steps to follow.
What You Will Need
• Garage door with an electric closer
• Access to the adjustment knob on the back of the door opener
Action Steps
Testing the Laser Beam
1. Locate the electric eye that creates a laser beam across the door opening.
2. Start the garage door closing.
3. Break the laser beam while the door is closing.
4. Confirm the door auto-reverses and goes back up.
Testing Resistance
5. Start the garage door closing.
6. Apply resistance (such as pressing down) on the door while it is coming down.
7. Observe if the door auto-reverses immediately.
Adjusting the Closing Force
8. If the door fails the resistance test, locate the knob on the back of the opener that adjusts the closing force.
9. Crank the closing force knob down by about half, as it may be turned up too high.
10. Retest the door by starting it closing and applying resistance to confirm it now auto-reverses.
