How To Tie A Trucker's Hitch
Quick Summary
This video teaches you the two essential knots needed to safely secure any load: the GE knot and the powerful Trucker's Hitch. You will learn the step-by-step process for tying these knots correctly, avoiding the common mistake of just creating tangles. Knowing the Trucker's Hitch is vital because it creates a 3-to-1 mechanical advantage, allowing you to pull your load super tight. Additionally, when you are finished, both knots are designed to come apart smoothly and easily.
What you'll need and what to do
To try what's taught in the video, here's what you'll need and the exact steps to follow.
What You Will Need
• Rope
• Load (to secure)
• Trailer or anchor point (hitch)
Action Steps
1. Pass the rope from underneath the anchor point.
2. Bring some of the rope back.
3. Pinch the rope with your fingers.
4. Fold the end of the rope over.
5. Wrap the rope twice around the two lines.
6. Put a loop through the wrapped section.
7. Pull the knot tight against the trailer or anchor point.
Tying the Trucker's Hitch (Tensioning Knot)
8. Bring the rope across the top of the load from the GE knot anchor.
9. Take the end of the rope and pass it underneath the opposite side anchor.
10. Come back up close to the load on the tension line.
11. Grab some of the tension line rope. 12. Make three twists in the grabbed section of rope.
13. Pull a loop through the three twists (this loop acts as a pulley).
14. Take the end of the rope and feed it through that new loop.
15. Pull the rope end to apply tension until the load is super tight.
16. Pinch the rope where tension is held and make a half hitch.
17. Take that end and put another half hitch on it to lock the knot.
Untying the Knots
18. For the Trucker's Hitch, take the lock off (undo the final half hitch).
19. Pull the first loop (the pulley loop) to release tension.
20. Pull the rope through.
21. Pull the second loop (the half hitch) to release the rope.
22. For the GE knot, take the tail and pull it until the knot comes out.
Word for word video transcript
Hey everyone Brandon Nelson and in one minute I'm going to show you the two knots you need to know to tie down any load here's how most people tie the first knot they put the Rope through and then they just start making Tangles until it looks like something that won't come undone and they hope for the best now here's how you should be doing it this knot is called a GE Now watch what I do here I'm going to come from underneath bring some of the Rope back then pinch it with my fingers fold this end over now I'm going to wrap it twice around those two lines and put a loop through and that's it then I'm going to pull it tight against the trailer we've got our hitch over there so we come across the top of the load and then again what most people do is pull as tight as they can and then make some new Tangles and hope for the best all right but here's what we're going to do we're going to tie what's called a Trucker's Hitch all right take the end of the rope and pass it underneath again and then we're going to come back up to real close to the load grab some of this rope make three twists okay then we're going to pull a loop through that Loop is now like a pulley for us now we take the end of our rope and come through that Loop we've got a 3 to one mechanical advantage where we can really pull it tight we've got it super tight I'm just going to pinch right here and make a half hitch and the last step is to take that end and put another half inch on it to lock it now here's the best part when you're all done watch how smoothly these knots come apart for the Trucker's Hitch we take that lock off then we pull the first Loop pull our rope through pull the second Loop now back to our first knot same thing you just take that tail pull it knot comes right out this has been Brandon Nelson for 1 minute I'll see you next time what do you want to learn in one minute comment below or email me at Brandon@Brandonnelson.com.
