Kayak Rudder Repair Without Going to Shore

Quick Summary

This video demonstrates an instant trick to repair a broken kayak rudder cable without going to shore. You will learn how to rig a simple loop of bungee with a hook onto your kayak's deck before launching. If a steering cable breaks, this bungee hook attaches to the rudder yoke on the broken side. This quick fix is vital because if a cable breaks, you lose steering control, which can be dangerous, especially if conditions require a rudder to steer. The bungee acts like the broken cable, allowing your one good pedal and cable to maintain steering control.

What you'll need and what to do

To try what's taught in the video, here's what you'll need and the exact steps to follow.

Word for word video transcript

Hey everyone Brandon Nelson and in one minute I'm going to show you an instant kayak rudder repair trick that could save your life if your kayak's design or your skills or the conditions require that you use a rudder to steer then it is probably controlled by foot pedals connected to the rudder by cables when you press on those pedals with your feet and that rudder turns right or left and your boat goes exactly where you want it to go but if one of those cables breaks all you can do is pin that rudder to one side and now you have no control but there's a very easy fix here's how you rig it before you ever put your kayak in the water you're just going to attach a loop of bungee with a hook on it on the deck of your kayak right in front of the rudder yoke if that cable breaks you just take that hook and attach it to that side of the rudder yoke now when you go to steer that bungee pulls the rudder in one direction and your one good pedal and cable pull it in the other direction you have control again it works the exact same way with the regular sea kayak just hook that bungee on the side with the broken cable this has been Brandon Nelson for one minute I'll see you next time.
