Broken Attic Gasket? Here’s the One Simple Fix You Need!

Quick Summary

This video teaches you how to quickly replace a damaged gasket on your attic hatch to stop significant heat leakage from your home. You will learn the process of removing the old, damaged foam gasket from both the hatch cover and the opening to ensure clean edges. The solution involves applying a new roll of adhesive gasket material directly onto the hatch cover, trimming it, and pressing it firmly into place. Knowing this fix is important because a broken gasket allows heat to escape, increasing energy costs, and this simple repair restores thermal efficiency.

Word for word video transcript

Hey everyone, Brandon Nelson, and in one minute I'm going to show you how to replace a damaged gasket on your attic hatch so your house stops leaking heat. I've taken the hatch down. Now we can see how damaged that gasket is. We're going to pull off the rest of this damaged foam. We're going to make sure this edge gets clean as well by taking off this part of the gasket. Now we've got a clean edge on the hatch opening and a clean edge on the hatch cover.

So I've got a new role of adhesive gasket material here. I'm just going to roll it out right on the hatch cover and stick it into place, and then when each side is done I'm just going to trim it to length.

Now with the gasket in place, just take one more second to press it down. Make sure it's all firmly into place. Then just peel off that paper backing and it's ready to go up into the hatch. Make sure that insulation goes over the top of it because that's going to really hold a lot of the heat in the house.

All right, you ready for the magic? BAM! New gasket, no more leakage. This has been Brandon Nelson for one minute. I'll see you next time.
