Easily Adjust Your Water Temperature! Simple Steps for Better Control

Quick Summary

This video teaches you how to test and adjust your hot water temperature to ensure it is at a safe level. You will learn how to measure the temperature using a thermometer and how to locate and use the dial on your water heater to make adjustments. Knowing this is important because a temperature above 120 degrees Fahrenheit is not safe, and you need to be able to turn it down to avoid scalding. Additionally, you can save energy by setting the dial to "low" or "vacation mode" when you leave home for a period, as water heaters consume a significant amount of energy.

What you'll need and what to do

To try what's taught in the video, here's what you'll need and the exact steps to follow.

What You Will Need

  • Thermometer (an infrared thermometer or any other type)

  • Access to your home's hot water faucet (in the kitchen or bathroom)

  • Access to the temperature dial on your water heater

Action Steps

  1. Turn on the hot water in your kitchen or bathroom.

  2. Let the water run until it is all the way hot (until steam is rolling off it).

  3. Use a thermometer to measure the hot water temperature.

  4. Check the temperature reading to see if it is safe (anything less than 120 degrees is safe).

  5. If the temperature is higher than 120 degrees, go to the water heater.

  6. Locate the temperature dial on the water heater.

  7. Adjust the dial to turn the water temperature down (or up, as demonstrated in the video).

  8. Crank the dial (approximately the amount shown in the video).

  9. Give it a few minutes.

  10. Retest the water temperature.

  11. (Optional) If you are leaving for a vacation or going to be gone for a while, turn the water heater dial all the way down to "low" or "vacation mode" to save energy.

Hey everyone Brandon nelson and in one minute I'm going to show you how to test and adjust your hot water temperature just so it's at a safe level okay we start by turning on the hot water in your kitchen or bathroom and letting it run till it's all the way hot so now that the steam is rolling off the water I'm going to use a thermometer just like a home inspector would use this is an infrared thermometer but you can use anything you have in this case we're at a safe 115 degrees anything less than 120 is safe if it's higher than 120 you want to turn it down to adjust the water temperature at the water heater you come back to this dial and in this case we're going to turn this home's water temperature up a little bit crank that dial about that much all right give it a few minutes we retested it damn it's at 120 exactly where we want it there's another tip a water heater is one of the most inefficient appliances in a home it consumes a ton of energy so if you're leaving for a vacation if you're gonna be gone for a while come back to the dial turn it all the way down to low or in some water heaters it even says vacation mode this has been Brandon nelson for one minute I'll see you next time.
